A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya, has expressed optimism that the party is now strategically positioned for a strong comeback in the 2027 general elections following its latest decision at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Ajiya described the development as a crucial step toward reclaiming the leadership the party lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 presidential election.
“I have said it time without number and right now I can say that this is a step towards reclaiming our lost position in Nigeria’s political space,” he said.
Reiterating his long-held stance on power rotation, Ajiya stressed that any northern politician opposing a southern presidential candidate in 2027 would be acting against the North’s collective interest. According to him, allowing the South to complete eight years before power returns to the North is in line with the principle of rotational presidency enshrined in the PDP two decades ago.
“The rotational presidency remains the best for a heterogeneous nation like Nigeria to make a headway politically. It helps build political ideology and history for our children. So, I think the decision to maintain that transition is the best,” he noted.
On the question of who should fly the party’s flag in 2027, Ajiya singled out former President Goodluck Jonathan as the most viable candidate, particularly from the standpoint of the North. He argued that Jonathan would serve only one term, thus creating room for the North to reclaim power afterwards.
“We in the North know that Jonathan remains the best option because he wouldn’t ask for another tenure having spent four years before he was defeated by General Buhari in the 2015 presidential election. Jonathan is experienced, tried and tested. He doesn’t need much introduction because he has been there from his time as Vice President to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before becoming president himself. So we are happy hearing the news,” Ajiya declared.
The PDP chieftain, however, urged party members to avoid internal wrangling and divisive tendencies, cautioning that any return to infighting could drag the party back to its years of setbacks and failures.
