The Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has lauded Governor Uba Sani for recalling teachers dismissed by the previous administration, describing the decision as a step toward correcting past injustices.
The commendation was made on Tuesday by the Kaduna NLC Chairman, Comrade Ayuba Magaji Suleiman, while addressing members of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ), who are currently in the state for a Governance Assessment visit.
It will be recalled that the administration of former Governor Nasir el-Rufai had sacked more than 23,000 teachers, including the then National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), during controversial screening exercises in 2018 and 2021.
Suleiman revealed that Governor Uba Sani’s administration has already recalled Head Teachers, Administrative Staff, and Science Teachers who were affected by the mass dismissal, adding that the process of addressing the errors of the past is still ongoing.
Speaking on the implementation of the new minimum wage, the Labour leader confirmed that the Governor had approved a N72,000 minimum wage, which has already taken effect for workers on levels 1 to 7. “Governor Uba Sani has commenced payment of N72,000 minimum wage for workers in the lower cadre, and we appreciate His Excellency for his prompt action. However, we are still working on consequential adjustment for senior staff,” he said.
According to him, the Kaduna State Government will require over N1.2 billion monthly to fully implement the wage increase across all categories of workers.
Suleiman also commended the state government for deploying 20 buses to provide free transportation for workers and students, noting that the intervention was crucial in cushioning the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.
Meanwhile, NGIJ members are engaging stakeholders and administering questionnaires across the 23 local government areas of Kaduna State as part of the ongoing Governance Assessment exercise.
