Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has emphasized the role of social media as a catalyst for sustainable development, job creation, and the promotion of the state’s brand identity.

Speaking at the 3rd Edition of the Delta State Social Media Summit held on Thursday at the Maryam Babangida Leisure Park, Asaba, the Governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prince Johnson Erijo, commended the organizers for their dedication to positioning social media as a driver of innovation and economic growth.

Themed “Brand Delta, Grow Delta,” the summit brought together creators, entrepreneurs, and media practitioners to deliberate on the vast opportunities within the digital space.

Governor Oborevwori noted that social media has evolved from a personal communication tool to a powerful instrument for economic advancement, political participation, and cultural promotion.

“The theme of this summit is in line with our aspiration to not only tell our unique story but to leverage that narrative to create opportunities and foster prosperity. Social media offers us a platform to project the positive image of Delta, showcasing our investment opportunities, cultural heritage, and human capital to a global audience,” he stated.

He stressed that beyond projecting the state’s brand, digital platforms provide youths with avenues to become creators, entrepreneurs, and influencers, thereby contributing to job creation and economic diversification. He assured that the state government, in partnership with the House of Assembly, would continue to provide enabling policies that encourage digital literacy, infrastructure development, and access to technology.

Delivering a goodwill message, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, reinforced the significance of social media in building a digitally astute, economically vibrant, and socially inclusive Delta.

In his welcome address, the convener of the summit and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Ossai Ovie Success, explained that the initiative was conceived to equip young people with creative, entrepreneurial, and digital innovation skills. Sharing his personal story, he revealed how social media had opened doors for his career in government media engagements. He further disclosed that the state government had already empowered over 250,000 youths, assuring that the summit would strengthen opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs.

The event also featured lectures and goodwill messages from notable personalities, including ace musician Harrysong, Dr. Charles Apoki, Dr. Nkem Imarue of Freshstart Interiors and Designs, Pastor Julius Ekweozor, Teacher Chike, Mr. Emmanuel Osazuwa, and Blessing CEO.

One of the high points of the day was the presentation of empowerment packages to outstanding young entrepreneurs, who received both financial support and mentoring opportunities.

The summit concluded with a collective charge to participants to deploy social media as a tool for positive change, innovation, and growth, in alignment with the vision of “Brand Delta, Grow Delta.”
