The Delta State Government has strongly dismissed allegations by self-acclaimed coordinator of the Niger Delta Peace Coalition (NDPC), Zik Gbemre, accusing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of stoking ethnic conflict and politicizing sensitive communal matters in Warri.

In a statement released on Sunday, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads and Public Information), Charles Aniagwu, described Gbemre’s claims as false, misleading, and a calculated campaign of calumny targeted at the Governor. He stressed that the allegations do not reflect Oborevwori’s consistent record of promoting peace, unity, and inclusive governance in the state.

“Since assuming office, Governor Oborevwori has prioritized the peaceful coexistence of all ethnic nationalities in Delta State, with particular attention to the unique diversity of Warri and its environs. He has consistently engaged traditional rulers, community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure the dark days of ethnic strife never return to our beloved state,” the statement read.

The government reiterated that at no point had the Governor endorsed or supported actions capable of threatening peace or suggesting ethnic superiority. Rather, Oborevwori has acted as a neutral arbiter, calling for restraint, dialogue, and mutual respect among all communities.

Aniagwu disclosed that the Governor recently underscored this position during his State of the State address, where he reaffirmed his commitment to fairness and directed security agencies to investigate reported incidents of vandalism and provocation in Warri.

“It is inaccurate and unfair to suggest that the Governor ‘takes delight in making passive threats’ or that he is ‘playing politics’ with the situation. His Excellency has maintained open channels of communication with all traditional institutions in Delta State,” Aniagwu stated.

He further assured that cultural celebrations across the state would continue to be conducted within the bounds of law and tradition, with accountability applied wherever infractions occur.

Appealing to community leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations, Aniagwu urged restraint in rhetoric and collaboration with government in fostering unity.

“Governor Oborevwori remains Governor for all Deltans—Itsekiri, Urhobo, Ijaw, Isoko, Anioma, and every other group. He will not be distracted by unfounded accusations or attempts to politicize communal issues,” Aniagwu affirmed.

The Commissioner concluded by stressing the Governor’s unwavering resolve to promote peace and drive development across Delta State while attracting investments that would open up economic opportunities for all citizens.
