Protest Erupts in Abuja Over Alleged Police Shooting at Disputed Estate Site

Abuja was gripped by tension on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, as staff of Olusco Group of Companies staged a protest over what they described as police brutality and bias in a land dispute involving their company and a claimant, Mr. Pretty Okafor, who identified himself as president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).

The demonstration followed the alleged shooting of an Olusco staff member, Mr. Yakubu Lawal Omaye, who reportedly sustained gunshot wounds during a confrontation at a contested estate site in Games Village. Eyewitnesses alleged that the incident occurred when police officers moved to enforce control of the property in favour of PMAN, despite the matter being subject to ongoing court proceedings.

Protesters accused the officers of overstepping their role by intervening in a civil dispute.The demonstration followed the shooting of an Olusco staff member, Mr. Yakubu Lawal Omaye, who reportedly sustained gunshot wounds during a confrontation at a contested estate site in Games Village.

The Chairman of Olusco Group, Mr. Olumeyan Oluwafemi, who led the demonstration, condemned the shooting and criticized the police for what he described as contempt of court. He urged the Inspector-General of Police and other authorities to step in and ensure neutrality in the matter.

The protest drew dozens of workers demanding justice for their injured colleague and calling for an end to what they alleged was institutional intimidation.

As at press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
