…Set to Host National Dialogue on October 1st, Launch Alliance for Defence of Democracy
In a major political development, the National Consultative Front (NCFront), in collaboration with the Labour and Civil Society Front (LCSF), has unveiled plans to rally some of Nigeria’s most respected statesmen, legal minds, civil society advocates, and labour leaders for a mass movement on electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision, according to a statement signed by Mallam Hamisu San Turaki, spokesperson of NCFront, was reached at a high-level leadership consultative meeting convened in Lagos over the weekend. The move follows resolutions adopted at the just-concluded National Constitutional Summit organized by The Patriots and the Nigeria Political Summit Group (NPSG).
At the core of the initiative is a major National Dialogue on Electoral Reforms, scheduled for October 1st, 2025, which will serve as the launchpad for what the conveners describe as a mass campaign to “mobilize Nigerians at home and abroad” for urgent changes to the country’s electoral framework.
According to the NCFront, the reforms being advocated are intended to correct flaws that compromised the credibility of the 2023 elections and to strengthen the democratic process in preparation for 2027.
The group stressed that issues such as transparent result management, criminalization of electoral malpractices, participation of Nigerians in the diaspora, and greater inclusion of women and vulnerable groups in governance are central to the reform agenda.
To give weight to the campaign, a formidable list of eminent Nigerians and “leaders of conscience” have been enlisted to champion the reforms. These include academics, former electoral chiefs, senior lawyers, clerics, civil society figures, political leaders, and labour union heads.
As part of the drive, the coalition will also formally unveil a new reform-oriented platform, the Alliance for Defence of Democracy (ADD), on October 1st. According to the statement, ADD will serve as “a popular alternative movement to drive and structure the campaign and mobilization process for these critical electoral reforms.”
The national dialogue, which coincides with Nigeria’s Independence Day, is expected to feature addresses from several leading voices, including Nigerian Labour Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
NCFront emphasized that the effort is not only about correcting flaws from the 2023 elections but about laying the foundation for a more credible and inclusive process in 2027 and beyond.
“Our mission is to ensure that the will of Nigerians is not subverted by outdated laws, weak institutions, and a political culture that undermines democracy. The Alliance for Defence of Democracy will be a people-driven platform to safeguard and advance the future of elections in Nigeria,” the statement added.
With barely two years to the next general elections, the coalition’s push signals what could become one of the most significant citizen-driven reform movements since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
