In a dramatic move that raises the stakes in Nigeria’s political climate, Citizen Bolaji O. Akinyemi has declared a “Citizens’ State of Emergency” against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing threats to his life and the disabling of all his social media accounts as the trigger for his latest campaign.

Akinyemi, in a strongly worded letter addressed to journalists and Nigerians, said he was forced to go underground for personal safety after publishing an article demanding the immediate sack of Central Bank Governor, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, by President Tinubu.

“Yet, let it be clear: the mission for a better Nigeria will not die,” he vowed, emphasising that the declaration was neither an act of rebellion nor defiance, but a patriotic duty.

The Citizens’ State of Emergency, according to Akinyemi, is anchored on what he described as Nigeria’s “existential needs,” which he outlined as: reliable energy supply, adequate security, revitalisation of education, modernised agriculture, and urgent reforms in the Central Bank to ensure prosperity for hardworking Nigerians.

“Its purpose is singular: to focus the government of the day on our existential needs above politicised projects,” he wrote.

He announced that a series of articles will be released back-to-back in the build-up to Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary on October 1, warning that if no action is taken before then, the Citizens’ State of Emergency would remain in force until 2027.

In his rallying call, Akinyemi urged Nigerians and the media to amplify his message:
“Publish it. Share it. Circulate it. Stand with it.”

He concluded with a charged declaration of collective responsibility:
“This is not my fight alone. It is our collective responsibility as citizens to insist on governance that works, a system that serves, and a nation that survives. Nigeria must not fail.”

The declaration, signed by Akinyemi himself, comes at a time of mounting criticism of the Tinubu administration’s economic and security policies, adding yet another layer of citizen-led activism to Nigeria’s political discourse.
