Former Minister of Information, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Ikeobasi Mokelu (Onwa Oreifite), has been appointed Patron of Umuigbo United Assembly (UUA) Worldwide.
The appointment was formally conveyed in a letter dated September 15, 2025, signed by the President-General (PG) of UUA, Evang. Amb. Raphael C.D. NwaDavid, and the National Secretary, Dcn. Benjamin Arisa.
Presenting the letter at Chief Mokelu’s residence in Abuja, on September 16, 2025, the PG Amb. NwaDavid led a high-powered delegation that included the National Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, the North Central Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Ogbonna Nwokocha, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Women Leader, Apostle Amaka Akigwe.
In the letter, UUA described Chief Mokelu as “a bridge-builder across Nigeria in the collective interest of the Igbo nation” and commended his unwavering commitment to Igbo culture, values, and heritage. The organisation noted that his exemplary service as a worthy ambassador of Igboland both locally and internationally had inspired generations of Ndi-Igbo.
The PG used the occasion to appeal to the former Minister to support the forthcoming Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide’s national youth programme in October, tagged “Recover and Restore the Youths of the Nation”, aimed at promoting the values of hard work, honesty and patriotism among young people in the country.
Accepting the appointment, Chief Mokelu expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of UUA Worldwide for the honour bestowed on him.
He pledged to support the pan-Igbo organisation in all its noble projects and initiatives, assuring the delegation that he would deploy his influence, experience, and goodwill in advancing the cause of unity, progress, and cultural pride among Ndi-Igbo and the entire country.
He emphasized that regardless of tribe or religion, every Nigerian should treat others the way they would want to be treated in return, adding that his family highly values integrity and service to humanity.
The Umuigbo United Assembly Worldwide is a pan-Igbo organisation dedicated to promoting unity, cultural preservation, and socio-political development of Ndi-Igbo both in Nigeria and the Diaspora.
