AGOBI ’27: Opposition Stakeholders Move to Urge Atiku to Back Obi as Only Path to Defeat APC in 2027

A coalition of opposition stakeholders, political groups, and civil society organisations under the umbrella of the Save Democracy Mega Alliance (SDMA), ADC Coalition Stakeholders, and Civil Societies Alliance has unveiled what it described as Nigeria’s foremost political freedom project since independence, codenamed “Atiku Givus Obi 2027 (AGOBI ’27).”

The coalition issued a stark warning that unless former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of the Labour Party unite under a single presidential ticket, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will secure a second term “through rigged federal machineries and institutions.”

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a four-day intensive political consultation and consensus building parley in Abuja FCT, tagged “Atiku Givus Obi 2027” or AGOBI ’27 for short.

It was jointly signed by Prince Tony Akeni of the Save Democracy Mega Alliance (SDMA), Mallam Khalil Ahmed Rufai of the Upright Nigeria Foundation (UNF), Primate Henry Amike representing the South-West Steering Committee, High Chief Peter O. Ameh, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), ACG Ali Wakili (Rtd) of NC-Front, Hon. Charles Darlington of Good Citizens for Peace & Progress Initiative (GCPPI), Dcn. Comrade Abbas Alao of Nigeria Cannot Continue Like This (NCC-LIT), Chief Oloye A. Adeniji of the National Rescue Congress (NRC), Prince Chuka R. Nnorom representing the South-East Steering Committee, and Barr. Esmerald Bright-Bazunu of the Legal Committee.

In a strongly worded release, the coalition declared: “In 2027, about 230 million citizens of our country will have another opportunity to break the chains of ruthless, rudderless and remorseless misrule and tyranny in our nation by the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“If the right decisions are taken by stakeholders of our opposition political parties and electorates, we shall achieve the urgent objective of emancipating our country through the ballot. But if the leaders of the progressive opposition miss presidential victory through wrong decisions, the consequences shall be dire in countless ways.”

The group praised both Atiku and Obi as “eminently qualified to preside over our country as President and recover our nation to the path of greatness,” but warned that intelligence reports and a year-long study had revealed “practically insurmountable obstacles” already embedded by the APC to prevent either man from winning if they run separately.

According to the coalition, the ruling party has perfected a three-pronged strategy to guarantee Tinubu’s reelection, citing what they described as “21 barricades,” with three revealed for emphasis.

The first, they alleged, is the planned abolition of the physical Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) and its replacement with a computer-generated voter’s slip.

They described this as a “masterstroke of electoral fraud ingenuity” designed to replace biometric verification of voters on election day with “computer concocted wide victory margins in targeted states.” The group drew parallels to what they termed “phantom data frauds” in Osun State during the last voter registration exercise, arguing that the APC intends to replicate such anomalies nationwide in 2027.

The second obstacle, they claimed, will be a nationwide armed security lockdown, transforming election day into what they described as “a state of civil war.”

According to the coalition, “All INEC results announcement offices at state and national headquarters shall be garrisoned with heavily armed military and paramilitary forces against access by opposition party officials, reporters, election observers and independent inquirers.”

The third alleged barricade is what the alliance called a “Nation’s Betrayal Triangle” involving the police, military, and judiciary. They accused the government of mobilizing trillions of naira in off-record spending to secure loyalty across institutions, including a luxury housing project for judges in Katampe District of Abuja, which they argue is designed to influence judicial outcomes in election petitions.

Issuing a direct appeal to Atiku, the coalition warned that Nigeria’s political dynamics in 2027 heavily disfavour another northern candidate. “More than 90 per cent of Nigerians in nearly all the three Southern geopolitical zones and the Middle Belt have taken a resolute stance that rather than vote another Northern Hausa-Fulani candidate, they would rather vote Tinubu for a second term,” the statement read.

It continued: “Knowing the inevitable consequences of contesting, we appeal to your sense of duty, legacy, patriotism and submission to the will of Almighty Allah to magnanimously step into the shoes of a statesman and put your weight behind Peter Obi.”

The group assured Atiku that if circumstances were reversed, the same call would have been made to Obi in favour of him. They insisted that only a united opposition candidacy could withstand APC’s “federal might.”

“While Tinubu could easily defeat both Atiku and Peter Obi contesting separately, a hundred Tinubus with a hundred-fold of all the structures at his command cannot return to office in 2027 if Atiku gives Obi a Vice Presidential choice and stands behind him,” the coalition declared.

Concluding their message, the alliance issued a historical challenge to Atiku: “Which of these, Sir, do you wish to be remembered for? The man who sacrificed his ambition to liberate Nigeria or who sacrificed Nigeria for his ambition yet never got it? Time will tell and retell the AGOBI story, and this question will be asked again at your final resting place and many years after.”

Quoting the Qur’an to reinforce their plea, they reminded Atiku of the divine injunction to act justly: “Act justly, that is nearer to god-fearing… Persistently standing firm in justice, even if it be against yourself.” (Qur’an 5:8, Surah An-Nisa 4:135).

The AGOBI ’27 campaign, they announced, will in the coming weeks roll out local and international activities aimed at rallying Nigerians toward a united opposition front, declaring that without such unity, Tinubu’s APC would ride unchallenged into another four years of power.
