In a strategic move to bolster regional security, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, His Excellency Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON mni, met with Mali’s Interim Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Maïga, on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The bilateral meeting focused on enhancing defence and security collaboration between Nigeria and Mali, with particular emphasis on coordinated efforts to combat terrorism across the Sahel region. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening military ties and fostering multilateral cooperation among Sahelian states.
According to official sources, the discussions underscored the urgency of a unified regional approach to counter insurgency and extremist threats that continue to destabilize parts of West Africa. The ministers also explored avenues for intelligence sharing, joint training programs, and cross-border operations aimed at restoring peace and stability.
