In a stirring declaration that challenges the status quo of Nigeria’s legal profession, newly called lawyer Barrister Blossom Mmesomachi Ubani has said her pursuit of law was driven by a passion for justice and human rights—not the prestige often associated with the profession.
Speaking shortly after her call to Bar ceremony in Abuja, Ubani, who hails from Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, criticized systemic delays in the judiciary and called on her colleagues to uphold the true essence of legal service.
“The congestion in our courts is not just the fault of underfunding or weak institutions,” she said. “Some lawyers deliberately prolong cases because they profit from delays. Justice delayed is justice denied, and we must take responsibility.”
Ubani recounted how her upbringing shaped her commitment to justice, recalling instances where individuals were denied their rights due to lack of legal representation.
“Growing up, I saw people denied their rights simply because they could not afford proper legal representation. I promised myself I would use the law to defend the voiceless,” she stated.
She urged fellow lawyers to embrace integrity and view the profession as a noble calling rather than a commercial enterprise.
“The legal profession is a call to service, not a business in gown,” Ubani emphasized.
Her father, Chief Ifeanyi Ubani, expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for witnessing his daughter’s milestone achievement.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures including philanthropist Chief Mike Jacob Nwoko, Eze Igbo Angwandodo of Gwagwalada, and Obilo James, among others, who came to celebrate the young lawyer’s entry into the profession.
Barrister Ubani’s remarks have sparked conversations about ethics and reform in Nigeria’s legal system, positioning her as a bold new voice in the pursuit of justice.
