A coalition of civil society organizations under the umbrella of the Amalgamated Civil Society Organizations of Nigeria (ACN) has cautioned against what it described as attempts by some political actors to incite unrest in the country through planned nationwide protests.

In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Gbenga Ashiru Abiodun, National Coordinator, and Comrade Yakubu Abdullahi, General Secretary, the group expressed concern over what it termed “a growing campaign of division and blackmail” that could undermine national peace and democratic stability.

The statement, titled “Sowore and Divisive Anti-Democratic Forces Must Be Stopped; Enough is Enough!”, emphasized that while peaceful protest is a legitimate right in a democracy, any action that threatens public safety or targets national institutions must be discouraged.

“The ongoing campaign of distraction, disharmony, and division against the Nigerian government by some individuals and groups is a cause for concern in our growing democracy,” the coalition said.

“We must resist any attempt by anti-democratic forces to plunge the nation into crisis or undermine the unity and peace we have worked so hard to sustain.”

Call for Security Vigilance and Dialogue

The group urged relevant security and intelligence agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), to remain alert and ensure that any public demonstration does not degenerate into violence or destruction of property.

It also called for restraint among citizens and advised those advocating for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to embrace dialogue and lawful means.

“We urge all peace-loving citizens desirous of genuine freedom for Nnamdi Kanu to use the instrument of dialogue in pursuance of such a goal. The matter is already in court, and only negotiation and out-of-court settlement can guarantee a peaceful resolution,” the statement read.

According to the coalition, prominent leaders from the South East and other regions are already engaging with the Federal Government to find an amicable solution to the issue.

“We are aware that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working with critical stakeholders from the region to ensure reconciliation and peace,” the ACN noted.

Appeal for National Unity and Peace

The group reiterated its commitment to the unity of Nigeria and the sustenance of democratic governance, urging Nigerians not to allow ethnic or political differences to divide them.

“The forthcoming protest being discussed by some actors must not be allowed to inflame sectarian tensions or undermine the economic and developmental objectives of the Tinubu administration,” the statement cautioned.

The ACN maintained that while it recognizes citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and expression, such rights must be exercised responsibly and in ways that do not jeopardize national security or the wellbeing of other citizens.

“Nigeria’s unity and peace are far more important than the personal ambitions of any individual or group,” the coalition emphasized.

“We stand firmly with democracy, good governance, and the rule of law. Enough is enough of actions that endanger the peace and stability of our country.”

The group concluded by announcing plans to engage civil society stakeholders, faith leaders, and community-based organizations across the country in dialogue aimed at promoting peace, democratic responsibility, and civic education.
