The Network of Peace & Security (NPS), a coalition of citizens and civic advocates committed to promoting peace and unity, has cautioned against activities or rhetoric capable of undermining Nigeria’s stability, urging all citizens — including activists and political leaders — to channel their grievances through lawful and peaceful means.

The group condemned what it described as “the atrocious and unpatriotic activities of Omoyele Sowore, which are aimed at destabilizing Nigeria and undermining the efforts of the government to deliver on its mandate to the people.”

In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by Comrade Maduka Ogbonna, National Convener of the Network, the group emphasized the importance of safeguarding national peace amid growing political tensions.

“We must all act responsibly in exercising our rights to expression and association. Calls or actions that could lead to unrest do not serve the collective interest of Nigerians,” — Comrade Maduka Ogbonna, National Convener, Network of Peace & Security

The coalition noted that freedom of speech and civic participation are essential pillars of democracy but stressed that these rights should be exercised within the bounds of the law. It urged opinion leaders, activists, and citizens alike to promote dialogue, tolerance, and constructive engagement.

Ogbonna commended the President Bola Tinubu administration for what he described as its ongoing commitment to maintaining peace, security, and respect for human rights, calling on Nigerians to support efforts aimed at fostering national development.

“The government’s responsibility to protect human rights must be matched by citizens’ responsibility to use those rights for the good of society,” Ogbonna said.

The Network of Peace & Security further appealed to security agencies to remain professional and proactive in addressing potential threats to peace while respecting due process and the rule of law.

The statement concluded with a call for unity and collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to reject any form of provocation or divisive rhetoric that could disrupt harmony.

“Peace and stability are shared responsibilities. We must all work together — government, civil society, and the people — to ensure that Nigeria continues on the path of progress and democracy,” the statement added.

Recall that Omoyele Sowore, the Publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) has in recent times been at forefront of calls for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who was arrested in Kenya by the Federal Government in 2021, fixing Monday, October 20 as a date for national protest to press home the demand.
