In a shocking development, SaharaReporters has exclusively revealed that at least sixteen senior military officers have been arrested by the Armed Forces of Nigeria for allegedly plotting a coup d’état to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
According to top security sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, the detained officers — whose ranks range from Captain to Brigadier-General — were apprehended by operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) after intelligence reportedly uncovered secret meetings and plans to unseat the current administration.
While the military high command had earlier issued a statement attributing the arrests to “issues of indiscipline, repeated failure in promotion examinations, and perceived career stagnation,” insider sources told SaharaReporters that the official explanation was a cover-up aimed at preventing panic and maintaining public confidence in the armed forces.
“The 16 officers were planning a coup. The military authorities were just being diplomatic in the statement released by the spokesperson,” a senior DIA official told SaharaReporters. “They held secret meetings to plan the overthrow of the President and top government officials. The arrests were made quietly in their homes across the country.”
The detained officers are reportedly being held at the Defence Intelligence Agency headquarters in Abuja.
Another senior military source revealed that the alleged coup plot was the real reason behind the sudden cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade, which was to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
“Yes, they were arrested for planning to stage a coup. Intelligence showed they intended to strike during the parade, targeting the President and other top politicians. That was why the National Security Adviser and service chiefs advised that the parade be cancelled,” the source disclosed.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, had earlier confirmed the detention of some officers but gave a more general explanation, describing it as part of a “routine exercise” over “indiscipline and breach of service regulations.”
However, SaharaReporters’ findings indicate that the arrests stemmed from an elaborate plot to seize power from what the alleged conspirators described as “selfish politicians.”
Nigeria has experienced five successful military coups since gaining independence in 1960.
The latest revelation has reignited public debate about corruption, disillusionment, and growing frustration within the armed forces.
Security agencies are said to be on high alert as investigations continue into what could have been one of Nigeria’s most significant coup attempts in recent decades.
