The Dean, Faculty of Law, Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Professor Collins Chijioke, has issued a stern warning to the general public—especially law graduates of the institution preparing for admission into the Nigerian Law School—to beware of impostors attempting to defraud unsuspecting students.

The warning follows the discovery of a suspected fraudster who has been contacting ABSU Law graduates, claiming to have influence over the Law School admission list.

The man, who identified himself as Sunny and also used the alias Uzo, reportedly contacted a female Law graduate of the university via WhatsApp using the number +234 916 112 9389.

In a series of poorly written messages seen by reporters, the impostor presented himself as a “practice secretary” working for a professor in the Faculty of Law. He deceitfully claimed that the graduate’s name had been removed from the Law School admission list but could be reinstated upon payment of ₦100,000.

Part of the chat reads:

“My name is Sunny. I am the practice secretary for Prof. I am the one in charge of sending the list to law school, your name was formally in the list but you know how political the list is, it was replaced, but I can exchange it with your junior in backlog… I can remove someone’s name and put yours because you are an old set but for N100k. You pay part since it is impromptu and balance later when the list is out.”

The suspected fraudster further instructed the victim to pay ₦60,000 immediately and balance ₦40,000 later, providing bank account details: 0239047537, Wema Bank, Gift Onyinerchi.

Responding to inquiries, Professor Chijioke strongly condemned the fraudulent act and disowned the impersonator, stressing that the Faculty of Law and the Nigerian Law School maintain transparent, official procedures for admission.

The Dean, who described the act as “criminal and unfortunate,” said he had already reported the case to the State Security Service (SSS) for investigation and possible arrest of the suspect.

He urged all prospective Law School candidates and members of the public to disregard any such solicitation or promise of “assistance” with Law School admission, emphasizing that neither ABSU nor its officials collect money for inclusion on any admission list.

“Let it be on record that no staff or representative of the Faculty of Law has been authorized to collect any payment on behalf of the university or the Law School,” Prof. Chijioke stated. “Anyone caught engaging in such criminal impersonation will face the full wrath of the law.”

The Dean further advised ABSU students and alumni to verify any information relating to the Law School process directly from the Faculty or through official university channels, warning that scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their schemes.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among graduating Law students, many of whom are eagerly awaiting their official call-up for the next Law School session.
