The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, on Monday marked the birth anniversary of the late Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, with an emotionally-charged remembrance statement in which he described Ojukwu as a timeless symbol of courage, intellect, dignity and principled leadership whose ideas and steadfastness continue to influence Nigeria’s conscience decades after his passing.
In a press release posted on his official X handle, Obi declared that “Ojukwu Lives in Our Hearts and History.” He reverently reminded Nigerians that the former Eastern Region war leader should never be seen as a relic of the past, but as a moral compass whose sacrifices and intellectual conviction remain relevant in national discourse.
“Today, we remember the birth anniversary of our revered leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu. We continue to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” Obi wrote, stressing that the date should not just be symbolic memorialisation, but a conscious engagement with values, purpose, duty and nation-building.
Painting the picture of Ojukwu as more than a historical protagonist, Obi insisted that Ojukwu’s life represented the deeper meaning of leadership rooted not in title but character.
According to him, “Ojukwu was more than a figure in our history; he embodied courage, intellect, dignity and firm conviction. His life reminds us that leadership is not merely a position — it is a calling, a burden, and, at times, a test of one’s deepest values.”
Obi, who has consistently invoked the ethos of justice and ethical governance as the foundation for Nigeria’s transformation, urged Nigerians to draw from Ojukwu’s moral example to build a country anchored on truth, fairness, humanity and collective responsibility.
“As we reflect on his legacy, may we be inspired to build a society grounded in truth, equity, and humanity — ideals he held dear and defended resolutely,” he posted.
The former Anambra State Governor further prayed for the continued peace of Ojukwu’s soul and appealed to Nigerians of all generations, ethnicities and political affiliations to preserve the enduring lessons that defined his public life.
“May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy remain a guiding light for all who believe in justice, honour, and the power of a principled life,” Obi concluded.
Ojukwu, who led the attempt to declare the Republic of Biafra between 1967 and 1970, remains one of the most studied and debated figures in Nigeria’s post-independence evolution — revered across the South-East and respected nationwide for his intellect, bravery, cosmopolitan education and historic confrontation with the structural contradictions of the Nigerian federation.
Obi’s tribute adds to the institutional memory that, for many in the region and beyond, Ojukwu’s name is not merely history — it is a reference point for ethical resistance, unbending loyalty to justice, and the courage to defend what one believes is right.
In the face of growing national concerns over equity, fairness and governance ethics, the message resonates powerfully: Ojukwu remains a thesis on principled leadership — and his story still teaches.
