The Sowore Educational Scholarship Foundation has unveiled plans for the 2025/2026 edition of its annual #ComeToKiribo Youth and Community Festival, marking yet another milestone in a mission that began two decades ago with a personal vow made in honour of a beloved father.
In a statement, the founder of the Foundation, Omoyele Sowore, recalled in a statement how the initiative was born in 2005 following the passing of his father, David Omoremilekun Sowore. “When my father passed in 2005, I stood before the church at his burial and announced a scholarship in his name,” he said.
Sowore noted that his late father was a dedicated teacher who believed profoundly in education—not only for his own children, but for the entire community. “What began as a small idea—born from grief, hope, and duty—has today, 21 years later, blossomed into something far greater than we could have imagined.”
The forthcoming #ComeToKiribo Festival, themed “RISE FROM THE RIVERBANK,” will run from December 30, 2025, to January 1–2, 2026, in Kiribo. According to the Foundation, the event will feature an engaging combination of sports, cultural celebrations, academic activities, and community service initiatives designed to inspire, uplift, and empower young people.
At the heart of the programme is the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to providing scholarship support and skill-building opportunities for indigent students and community youths. The festival serves as a platform for participants to learn, compete, explore new abilities, and strengthen their sense of belonging and purpose. Sowore emphasised that the initiative aims to boost confidence, discipline, and long-term personal growth among its beneficiaries.
This year’s lineup promises a dynamic mix of competitive and educational events, including a 15 km marathon from Ajagba to Kiribo, a 5 km road race within the town, 500m and 100m swimming competitions, a vibrant boat regatta on the Kiribo waterways, cultural performances, music and dance showcases, academic workshops, and community service projects spread across Kiribo.
Over the years, #ComeToKiribo has grown into one of the most anticipated grassroots festivals in the region, offering youths the chance to build networks, display their talents, celebrate local heritage, and positively impact their community.
The Foundation noted that registration details, participation guidelines, and the full programme schedule will be released soon. It also encouraged supporters and well-wishers to contribute to the mission of reaching more deserving youths, while inviting the public to watch highlights from previous editions of the festival.
