The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has raised strong objections to what it describes as the increasing weaponisation of the Nigeria Police Force in the internal leadership crisis currently unsettling the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The organisation expressed alarm over reports indicating that police operatives were seen taking sides during the recent confrontation at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, the CNPP condemned the development as a “disturbing and dangerous trend” that undermines democratic norms. The group urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate steps to ensure that the police and all security agencies remain neutral and professional in the discharge of their duties.

The CNPP stressed that the President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, carries the constitutional responsibility to protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions and prevent the use of state security apparatus for partisan interests. Any failure to guarantee neutrality, it warned, could fuel political distrust and weaken public confidence as the 2027 general elections approach.

The umbrella body of all registered political parties and political associations cautioned political actors within the PDP against actions capable of destabilising the polity or threatening national cohesion. It noted that internal disputes should be resolved through recognised party structures and mechanisms rather than through forceful methods or attempts to drag the police into partisan battles.

Calling for strict adherence to due process and the rule of law, the CNPP reminded all political parties to operate within the boundaries of their constitutions and the extant laws governing Nigeria’s political system. It emphasised that internal democracy and institutional integrity remain vital to safeguarding the nation’s democratic future.

Reaffirming its dedication to defending Nigeria’s democratic order, the CNPP warned that political desperation, institutional abuse, or any act capable of undermining democratic stability must be resisted in the collective interest of the nation.
