The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) has issued a scathing condemnation of what it described as the reckless and dangerous use of the Nigeria Police Force in the intensifying leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a statement released on Tuesday, the pro-democracy group warned that the growing pattern of state-backed political intimidation poses an imminent threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

The statement, signed by the MCE Head of Secretariat, Olawale Okunniyi (Veteran Che), decried the “disturbing scenes” that unfolded at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, where police officers were allegedly seen taking sides in a confrontation between the newly elected PDP National Chairman, Mr. Tanimu Turaki, SAN, and a faction led by the ousted Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed. Mohammed is believed to enjoy the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

According to the organisation, the visible involvement of police officers in a partisan struggle represents “a dangerous descent into institutional abuse,” noting that it is both unprecedented and unacceptable for state security agents to be deployed as political enforcers in an internal party dispute.

MCE referenced a recent viral video in which police officers were seen engaging in a confrontation with soldiers over a disputed property linked to the FCT Minister, describing the two incidents as part of a “pattern of executive lawlessness” that threatens to normalise the misuse of security agencies for personal or political battles.

The group warned that such brazen politicisation of security institutions could erode public trust, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections. “No democracy can survive when security institutions become extensions of powerful political interests rather than guardians of law and order,” MCE stated.

The organisation called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene by restraining the FCT Minister and restoring professionalism within the nation’s security architecture. It stressed that the ongoing power tussles within the political elite amount to a direct attack on Nigeria’s democracy and risk plunging the nation into instability.

MCE urged Nigerians to resist what it called the growing “executive impunity and disorder,” and to join its efforts to safeguard democratic institutions—especially the police—from political manipulation. “Order must be restored, and we must all say no to executive lawlessness and rascality of the Nigerian ruling class,” the statement added.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising citizens nationwide to defend democratic governance and prevent further deterioration of institutional integrity.
