In a resounding demonstration of regional solidarity and forward-looking leadership, Hon. Dr. Aminu Jauro Hassan , National Welfare Officer of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), joined counterparts from across West Africa at the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) summit in Accra, Ghana.

The three-day Executive Strategic Leadership and Management Course for Effective Local Governance transcended routine training, evolving into a crucible for transformative ideas and collaborative strategies. Hon. Dr. Hassan Jauro emphasized that the gathering—featuring representatives from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones—was not merely about capacity building, but about positioning local governments as the heartbeat of Africa’s democratic and developmental future. Key Highlights of the event include Nigeria’s strong showing with its high-net-worth Delegation, which includes distinguished ALGON NEC members such as Hon. Ikenna Adikibe (Deputy National President), Hon. Olusegun Ojo (Ekiti), Hon. Anani Hamisu Mohammed (Plateau), Hon. Chief Isaiah Esiovwa (Delta), Dr. Folasade Adeyemo (Ogun), the ALGON Chairman for Ogun, and Elder I. Otuonye from the ALGON Secretariat and a host other Directors and accountants of finance.

Hon. Jauro, in one of his contributions, underscored that the summit was about assembling human capital resources to redefine governance at the grassroots level. He noted that “The event is about unlocking ideas and harnessing them together for socio-economic potential by empowering local councils to deliver on their constitutional mandate.

The Nigerian delegation’s presence in Accra signals a new era where local governments are no longer passive administrators but active architects of transformation, aligning the Renewed Hope Agenda with the sense of urgency that sub-national governance deserves. It is expected that this training will bring about robust and strategic collaboration focusing on strengthening ties with the Nigerian Governors Forum, aligning with federal priorities, and ensuring that development remains community-driven, people-focused, and sustainable.

Sharing his perspective this morning, Hon. Dr. Jauro expressed gratitude to His Excellency Governor Kefas Agbu of Taraba State for his unwavering support of local government administration. He noted that Nigeria’s readiness to align international best practices with local realities reflects a new governance trajectory—one that harmonizes regional aspirations with grassroots needs.

“This summit sets the tone for a defining moment in the evolution of local governance across West Africa,” Hon. Jauro remarked. “ALGON is determined to amplify the voice of grassroots leadership and drive Africa’s democratic and developmental agenda from the bottom up.”

It is expected that the event will bring about shared ideas flowing from Administration to Innovation, where Local councils are being reframed as engines of economic growth, not just service providers.

It also seeks to ensure Regional Solidarity, one that will be achieved by joining hands with West African counterparts, insisting that Nigeria will continue to demonstrate its commitment to shared learning and collective progress.

Hon Jauro also stated that part of its takeaways will be Deepening Democratic Gains through empowering local governments, strengthening democracy by bringing decision-making closer to the people. Ensuring Sustainability, where emphasis on community-driven development will help to ensure that governance is not imposed from above but grows organically from local realities, Jauro concluded.

The CLGF summit in Accra marks a pivotal step in shaping the future of local governance in West Africa. With ALGON’s active participation, Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in grassroots transformation, ensuring that democracy and development are not abstract ideals but lived realities for communities across the continent.
