Lagos is set to become the centre of Igala cultural pride and celebration this Sunday, December 7, 2025, as Chief Dr. Friday Alfa Abdullahi is to be formally crowned the Ogohi 1 of Onu Igala General, Lagos State in a historic coronation ceremony that promises to unite sons and daughters of Igala land and lovers of tradition from across Nigeria and beyond.
The landmark event, which will take place at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos State, beginning 1:00pm prompt, has been described by organisers as more than a ceremonial gathering, but a powerful reaffirmation of Igala heritage, identity and unity in the heart of Nigeria’s commercial capital.
In a statement made available to The Street Reporters, Chief Dr. Friday Alfa Abdullahi extended a heartfelt invitation to Nigerians from all walks of life, with special emphasis on Igala sons and daughters both at home and in the diaspora, to come out in large numbers to witness and be part of history.
He described the moment as a defining chapter not just in his personal journey, but in the collective story of the Igala people in Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.
“This coronation is not just about a title; it is a celebration of who we are as a people and where we come from,” Chief Dr. Alfa declared. “It is a call to our youths and elders alike to remember their roots, uphold our values, embrace our culture and remain proud of our nativity. Culture is the soul of any people, and when we honour it, we honour ourselves and our ancestors.”
The Onu Igala General of Lagos State, under whose authority the coronation is being conducted, noted that the installation of Chief Dr. Alfa Abdullahi as Ogohi 1 represents a significant step in strengthening the Igala traditional institution in Lagos, while fostering unity, cultural preservation and continuity among the people.
According to the Organising Committee, the ceremony is expected to draw a distinguished gathering of traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials, business executives, youth groups, cultural troupes and prominent Igala sons and daughters from various parts of Nigeria and the diaspora.
Cultural displays, royal processions, traditional music, dance performances and goodwill messages will form part of the colourful programme lined up for the day, making it one of the most significant Igala cultural events in Lagos in recent times.
The organisers have called on members of the public, cultural enthusiasts and well-wishers to grace the occasion and share in the joy of a people reconnecting with their heritage and celebrating their identity in unity.
As anticipation builds toward the weekend, all roads now lead to Ikeja, where history, tradition and celebration will converge in honour of the Igala people’s enduring legacy.
