In a major security breakthrough, the Department of State Services (DSS) has taken into custody a medical doctor suspected of ferrying drugs from Sokoto State to armed kidnappers operating in forested parts of Kwara State.
The interception occurred in the Jebba area following credible intelligence reports linking the physician to the criminal syndicate.
Authorities say the drugs — reportedly painkillers and antibiotics — were meant to treat kidnappers wounded in recent clashes with security forces.
“We believe the criminal gangs are increasingly desperate for medical care,” a security official said. As a result, the DSS has cautioned health-care providers and urged enhanced security at medical facilities in remote, forest-edge communities.
The arrest marks a significant disruption to the logistical networks sustaining kidnapping operations in the region. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the doctor was part of a wider medical-support network for the gangs.
Local residents and medical practitioners have been urged to remain vigilant as security agencies step up efforts to dismantle the support structures that sustain such criminal rings.
