The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially entered a transformative era in the nation’s power sector, marking 2025 as a milestone year defined by radical structural unbundling and record-breaking technical achievements.

In a comprehensive year-end review, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. (Dr.) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, detailed how the company has successfully reshaped its identity while simultaneously shattering national energy transmission records.

The most significant structural shift of the year was the formal unbundling of TCN and the successful take-off of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a move that allows TCN to pivot its entire focus toward infrastructural development, maintenance, and the expansion of the transmission network.

Abdulaziz described this reform as a bold step toward building a mature electricity supply industry that Nigeria deserves, effectively separating the physical infrastructure management from the general administration of system and market operations now handled by NISO.

Underpinning these structural reforms are massive technical gains that have bolstered the nation’s energy backbone. TCN’s wheeling capability has surged to 8,700MW, ensuring the network is better prepared to support the increasing demand for electricity across the country.

This expansion was fueled by the commissioning of eighty-two new power transformers between January 2024 and November 2025, which added over 8,500MVA to the national grid.

The year’s crowning achievement occurred on March 4, 2025, when the company transmitted an all-time peak generation of 5,801.84MW and delivered a record-breaking maximum daily energy of 128,370.75MWh nationwide.

These operational feats have been supported by a massive infrastructure blitz valued at over $1.16 billion, funded through strategic partnerships with international development partners. Key among these initiatives is the Abuja Feeding Scheme, which involves the construction of five new substations and a new 330kV transmission line designed to modernize the grid and meet the needs of a growing economy.

Despite these successes, the company continues to battle the persistent threat of infrastructure sabotage, having recorded 131 vandalism incidents across its network in the first eleven months of the year alone.

Looking toward 2026, Engr. Abdulaziz emphasized that the company cannot afford to rest on its oars and will intensify efforts to further increase grid capacity and stability.

He noted that the ultimate goal remains to journey toward becoming one of the leading electricity transmission companies in the world.

The Managing Director concluded by praising the dedication and professionalism of the TCN staff and the constructive collaboration with labor unions, which has helped maintain industrial peace and served as the true engine of the company’s progress throughout this historic year.
