Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, on Tuesday electrified the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as he led a high-powered grassroots engagement that significantly boosted the fortunes of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the February 21, 2026, local council elections.
Chants of “Obi Kerereke” rent the air across key parts of Abuja as the ADC’s 2027 presidential frontrunner toured markets, royal palaces and rural communities, energising residents and openly declaring support for ADC chairmanship candidates in the FCT.
Obi’s visit, which covered AMAC and Bwari Area Councils, was seen as a major political statement, lending momentum to the campaigns of Dr. Moses Paul, ADC Chairmanship candidate in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), and Hon. Josiah Musa Kuche of Bwari Area Council.
Solidarity at Kugbo Market
The ADC leader began his Abuja tour at the Kugbo Furniture Market, where traders recently suffered devastating losses following a fire outbreak. In a strong show of solidarity, Obi met directly with affected traders, describing their plight as deeply distressing amid Nigeria’s current economic hardship.
“My visit to Abuja began with a strong show of solidarity at the Kugbo Furniture Market… where traders experienced devastating losses due to this catastrophic event,” Obi wrote on his X handle. “I assured them that they would not only recover but thrive once more. Such incidents must be preventable through credible political leadership grounded in character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
The visit drew emotional reactions, including a moment that stirred the crowd when a nursing mother pushed forward for Obi to touch her child. Obi lifted the child amid loud cheers, reinforcing his connection with ordinary Nigerians.
At the palace of the District Head, Chief Philip Jezhi, Obi received a warm reception, as the royal father acknowledged the importance of his visit and the need for reforms in emergency response systems to avert avoidable disasters.
Bwari Rally Ignites Support
From Kugbo, Obi moved to Bwari, where Hon. Josiah Musa Kuche officially launched his chairmanship campaign at the Kubwa market square. The rally turned into a carnival of dance, music and chants as party supporters and traders trooped out in large numbers.
Addressing the crowd alongside Dr. Moses Paul, Obi urged residents to rally behind the ADC, stressing the party’s commitment to presenting “genuine candidates” capable of delivering real change.
One of the attendees, Hon. Abdullahi Musa, a former PDP member who recently defected to the ADC, declared: “This man is a true leader who comes to the people; I will follow him wherever he goes.”
Hope Rekindled in Rural Gui
The final leg of the tour took Obi to Gui, a remote village along Airport Road in AMAC, where he was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd brimming with hope. During a courtesy visit to the District Head, Alhaji Alhassan Yusuf, community leaders narrated years of neglect and appealed for development interventions.
Obi described rural engagement as a personal priority, saying it allowed him to gain firsthand understanding of grassroots challenges. He assured the community that support for the ADC in the forthcoming elections would translate into improved healthcare, water supply and road infrastructure.
“I emphasized the importance of their participation in shaping a new Nigeria, achievable through harnessing their voting power in the local council elections on February 21, 2026,” Obi said. “Together, we will forge the change they undeniably deserve.”
Political observers say Obi’s FCT tour has significantly altered the dynamics of the council elections, positioning the ADC as a major contender and reinforcing Obi’s enduring grassroots appeal across Nigeria’s political landscape.
