Tension gripped Benin City on Monday following reports of an armed attack targeting former presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a political event in the Edo State capital.
According to a source present at the scene, the incident occurred shortly after the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress. The source alleged that armed individuals trailed Obi and other party leaders from the ADC Secretariat to the residence of former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.
The attackers reportedly opened fire at the gate of the residence and vandalised several vehicles within the premises. The source described the incident as a “survived assassination attempt,” adding that Obi and members of the ADC leadership were under siege during the attack.
“They shot at the gate and destroyed several vehicles in what appears to be a survived assassination attempt on our lives,” the source stated, warning that “democracy is in danger.”
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from security agencies in Edo State confirming casualties or arrests linked to the incident.
The attack has heightened political tension in the state, with observers expressing concern over the implications for political safety and democratic engagement. Further details are expected as authorities respond to the developing situation.
