Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has commenced the deployment of 20 electric buses for public transportation, in a strategic move to mitigate the impact of rising petrol prices on residents.
The initiative, which aligns with broader efforts to reform the stateโs transport system, follows the earlier inauguration of the vehicles by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 20, 2025. The rollout also included 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 electric tricycles, and 100 electric vehicles aimed at enhancing mobility across Borno State.
The latest deployment, which began on Friday, April 3, features a fleet comprising 17 buses with 49 seating capacity, two buses with 37 seats, and one with 28 seats. These vehicles are now operating across major routes within Maiduguri and surrounding areas, offering residents a more affordable and efficient means of transportation.
Designed with modern features, the fully air-conditioned electric buses are energy-efficient and capable of covering over 400 kilometres on a single charge. The development complements earlier investments by the Zulum administration in buses and salon cars to improve urban transit infrastructure.
In a further boost to the scheme, the state government has established what is described as the largest electric vehicle charging terminal in Nigeria, with the capacity to simultaneously power up to 50 vehicles, ensuring operational sustainability.
As part of measures to shield residents from the broader effects of the global energy crisis, Governor Zulum has also directed the Borno Express Transport Service to maintain a highly subsidised fare of N50 per drop.
Early indications suggest the intervention is yielding tangible benefits, including reduced traffic congestion and improved access to affordable transportation for key segments of the population such as students, civil servants, and traders.
Residents have welcomed the development, describing it as both timely and impactful in the face of rising living costs.
The electric transport initiative underscores the state governmentโs commitment to promoting green energy solutions, modernising public infrastructure, and providing economic relief to vulnerable populations.
