โMDI Faults over 20, 000 security ย operatives ย deployed ย for deliberate laxity to create room for pre-meditated theft
A group, Media Development Initiative, ย MDI, ย has called on security ย agencies ย to ย immediately ย identify ย and prosecute those involved ย in ย the ย theft of 520 result sheets ย for 520 polling ย units ย in Rivers ย State.ย
In a statement ย issued ย in Port Harcourt ย on ย Thursday night, the group ย said that the theft of the result sheets in custody ย of Federal Government ย agencies ย is disheartening.ย
The Statement ย signed by ย Mrs Georgina Awaule regretted that despite the deployment ย of over 20,000 security ย personnel, ย sensitive ย result sheets could be stolen.
The group called on all civil and international ย observers to remain vigilant ย as the security ย agencies ย who allowed the theft may have been compromised.
They also berated Aniedi Ikoiwak, INEC REC in Rivers State who ย confirmed the missing result sheets for negligence. ย They wondered why ย Ikoiwak would ย also not confess that APC ย leaders were prominent ย on the INEC Adhoc list as has been confirmed ย by Gift Worlu, ย an APC member ย and lecturer at UNIPORT.
According ย to ย the group, it is unfortunate ย that ย INEC, security ย agencies ย and Adhoc staff ย by the theft of the result sheets have proven that they were involved ย in ย under-the-table activities.
They urged Rivers ย people not to be intimidated ย but to remain ย focused in monitoring ย the ย entire ย process from the distribution ย of voting materials ย to collation and the declaration ย of ย results.
The statement ย read: “This theft of result sheets as unfortunate ย as it is an eye-opener that Rivers ย people must remain ย vigilant. ย It is not the number ย of ย security ย operatives ย in the state that matter, ย it is the vigilance ย of the people ย that count. Nobody ย knows who is a thief in this process” .
