Water Minister Commemorates World Water Day Celebration With Borehole Commissioning
The Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu has commissioned a borehole at the Federal Government College, Apo, Abuja to commemorate the 2016 World Water Day Celebration.
The borehole was donated to the school by the Borehole Drillers Association of Nigeria (BODAN) as part of their corporate social responsibility and to also commemorate the 2016 World Water Day.
According to the Minister, in a statement by Director of Information and Public Relations, M.E. Umoh, water supply to most of our communities these days is often unreliable and sometimes contaminated because it is piped through a network of old, rusty and unhygienic drainages.
“It is in the bid to solve this problem that some government organizations, corporate bodies and individuals are resorting to the use of boreholes”, he explained.
While calling on the school to take ownership of the borehole, he urged the association to work hard in getting rid of quacks in the system. He added that the National Water Bill which is underway to becoming law will check excesses of drillers in the industry.
In his response, the principal of the college, Mr. Jonathan Mbaakaa thanked the minister and the drillers association for the honour of citing the borehole in the college which had been facing water challenges and that the borehole came as a relief to the college.
While joining others in the celebration of 2016 World Water Day, he promised to safeguard the borehole saying that “as water is life, the borehole is a source of life to us and we would guard it jealousy’’
In his brief remarks, the president Borehole Drillers Association, Mr. Francis Uzoma stated that the association is working in conjunction with the ministry in seeing that they adhere to the guidelines stipulated by the ministry.
On the National Water Bill, Mr Francis promised to work with the recommendations of the bill when passed into law in chatting a new phase of life for the drilling business in Nigeria.
