ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Movement for Credible Elections (MCE) is making a fresh push to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with plans underway to convene a strategic accord meeting of opposition presidential candidates and party leaders aimed at producing a consensus candidate.
Documents obtained by The Street Reporters Newspaper reveal that the initiative followed a strategy meeting of the MCE held on Friday, July 31, 2026, and chaired by Professor Pat Utomi, where participants resolved to urgently re-engage the electoral process amid what they described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democratic system.
The meeting reportedly mandated the immediate establishment of a tactical committee to be chaired by Prof. Utomi, with the responsibility of convening a “Strategic Consensus of Accord Meeting” involving the leadership of opposition political parties and their presidential candidates before the third week of August.
According to the internal memo, the proposed gathering will focus exclusively on implementing the Ibadan Declaration of the Nigerian opposition, which advocates the emergence of a single consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The organisers believe such an arrangement would strengthen democratic competition and provide a formidable challenge to the ruling party, warning that the country risks sliding into what they described as “one-party or one-man rule” if the opposition remains fragmented.
Findings by The Street Reporters Newspaper indicate that preparations for the historic meeting are already underway, with the MCE Secretariat reportedly activating logistics for a two-day parley scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, and Thursday, August 20, 2026, at a venue yet to be announced.
The planned summit is expected to bring together opposition presidential candidates, their running mates and top party officials in what could become one of the most significant political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
Although the internal communication did not disclose the identities of all expected participants, reliable sources within the movement indicate that prominent democracy advocates and political leaders, including Professor Pat Utomi, former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Dr. Kletsaint Akor Magoro and other key stakeholders are expected to play strategic roles in the process.
Political observers say the proposed accord meeting could significantly influence the dynamics of the 2027 presidential contest if it succeeds in forging broad consensus among Nigeria’s diverse opposition parties.
