5 Court Officials Docked for Setting Court’s Exhibit Facilities Ablaze

An Assistant Chief Registrar, ACR,  Salman Adeoye, 55, and four other officials of Lagos state magistrate court, were on Thursday, arraigned before an Ebute-metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, on charges bordering on conspiracy, arson and negligence.

 

Others charged alongside Adeoye were: Ridwan Yussuf, 39, Godwin Obadiah, 20, Olaluwoye Yemi, 60,, all security guard, and Lateef Balogun, 40, a store keeper.

 

The police in charged number D/22/2016, alleged that the five defendants had on March 11, 2016, at about 3.3.pm, conspired among themselves and wilfully and unlawfully set fire on the storage facility/exhibits building situated at Tapa street, Lagos Island.

They were also alleged to have failed to inform the Fire service and take proper precaution or action against the Fire outbreak.

 

The offences according to the prosecutor, Inspector Chinalu Nwadione are contrary to and punishable under section 409, 339, and 249(g)(h) of the Criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.

 

However, the five defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

 

Upon the plea of the defendants, their lawyers led by A. Gboromiro, urged the court to admit bail to their clients in a liberal term.

Consequently, the presiding magistrate, Mrs. Adelaja I. Oluyemisi, a Chief Magistrate, admitted bail to all defendants in the sum of N500, 000. 00 with two responsible sureties each.

 

The sureties according to the Chief Magistrate are to show to court evidence of three years tax payable to Lagos state government, affidavit of means and have their addresses verified by the court’s prosecutor.

 

The matter has been adjourned till May 18, 2016, for mention.
