…Says Local Government System Must Be Rejigged To Make It Work
Speaking to journalists at his house after casting his vote for the local government election in Rivers State, Honourable Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, member of the House of Representative, representing Obio/Akpor federal constituency of the State has called on Nigerians not to lose faith in the local government system of governance.
According to him, “I see little skirmishes here and there, accross the country; this is not enough to conclude that this system of governance will not work. We need to regig the local government to make it work”.
Speaking on the polls, he said “In my ward, we do not have issues at all, for the first time in Rivers State, no gunshots, no violence, this is highly commendable. Whoever is dissatisfied with the process can approach the court.”
On his accessment of the current administration in the State, Hon. Chinda noted that “what we are seeing surpasses what we were expecting; the Governor is carrying out unprecedented projects, there is no local Government in this state that do not have one project or the other.
“This road to his house was not passable but now, the road has been dualized and completed, why will the people not be happy”, he queried.
Also speaking after casting his vote, at unit 2, ward 9 Obio/Akpor local government area, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, expressed satisfaction for the electoral process and urged the Independent Electoral commission (INEC) to learn from the Rivers State Independent Electoral commission (RSIEC) how to conduct a peaceful and credible election”.
In his reaction,speaking in front of his house, Sir (Chief) Allwell C. Egwurugu, who voted at unit 006 ward 9 Obio/Akpor, commended the state Independent Electoral Commission for a free and credible process, while commending the state Government for laudable projects all over the state.
In another development, youths in their numbers were seen on major roads playing football game, while others were playing different kinds of games, even as the results of the election are being awaited as at press time.
Meanwhile, in some other parts of the state visited, including Eleme, Onne, Okrika, the people were not interested in the election. When asked, they said it is the ruling party that will carry the day, no need to waste their time.
Traders who observed the election day curfew were happy to start displaying their wares at five minutes after 5pm at Eleme. They waited for voting to end to start their business.
Reports reaching The Street Reporters Newspaper from various locations show
peaceful conduct of election though the main opposition party, All progressive Congress (APC), pulled out of the election alledging that the membership of the state electoral Umpire are card- carrying members of the peoples Democratic party (PDP) in the State.
However, the ruling party noted that the opposition party knew that the Rivers State is a PDP state, and cannot win any election in the state.
