It’s shocking to hear the news of his death but we must thank God Almighty for his long life, 85 years of age, which was highly eventful.
Being appointed by the former military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, as interim Head of National Government, just as an antic to settle the ongoing Nationwide protest or dust raised by the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, by the same military Head, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, they had jointly made themselves men of history and the four main Political Gladiators of June 12 alongside the winner of the election, now former President and the 1st Runner-up, who passed on few days ago in Kano, Kano State, Bashorun MKO Abiola and Alhaji Bashiru Tofa.
The later quicky conceded defeat, as a man of peace.
May their souls continue to rest in peace.
Now, the three are dead while the trouble shooter is alive
Remember that our former President, Bashorun MKO Abiola, and Chief Ernest Shonekan, came from Abeokuta, Ogun State, and this is the main reason the former military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, used one against the other.
As against popular belief that two Egbas don’t argue with each other, they were made to be sworn or cut throat Enemies, “Egba meji ti jara won ni yan”, with former enjoying the full support of the masses while the military Juntas and the few Beneficiaries of the plot from the elites, backed Shonekan.
After being appointed in August 26, 1993, he was later displaced in November 17, at a gunpoint by late General Sanni Abacha, who was left behind as the most Senior military Officer, just to protect the interim National Government, by President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, after he succumbed to local and International pressure, by stepping aside, according to his statement.
For General Sanni Abacha, after 5 years of being in power coupled with incarceration of Bashorun MKO Abiola, he started campaigning, to the next Nigerian elected President, due to local and International pressure for the immediate return to the Civilian rule, but man proposes, God disposes, he gave up his soul.
Whatever we are doing today, we are writing history of Tomorrow. Therefore, we must choose the right path of life to live.
He was once the Chairman of a big Conglomerate, UAC, and was highly respected by Nigerians because of his track record before his sudden and controversial appointment as the interim Head of National Government, in 1993.
He was a great man of history. Adieu, the Political light of Yorubaland.
