The speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kennedy Ibeh representing the Obowo State constituency has resigned from his position.
A new speaker Hon. Emeka Nduka representing the Ehime Mbano State constituency has been elected to replace the former speaker by members of the state assembly.
The election of a new speaker is to avoid a vacuum in the leadership of the house.
He was elected on Monday at a closed-door special sitting presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Amarachi Iwuanyanwu (APC-Nwangele) who called for nominations after reading Ibe’s letter of resignation.
The Majority Leader, Mr Kanayo Onyemaechi (APC-Owerri West) nominated Nduka, a nomination seconded by Dr Uju Onwudiwe (APC-Njaba).
No reason was given for the former Speaker’s resignation. Kennedy Ibeh was elected Speaker less than a year ago in 2021.
However, Hon. Emeka Nduka is now the fourth Speaker of the Imo State House Assembly to be elected in four years. He was the Deputy Majority Leader before his emergence as the Speaker.
