The umbrella association of like-minded pro-democracy and civil society groups in Enugu North Senatorial District of Enugu State, the Nsukka Democratic Movement (NDM) has congratulated the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on his award of the Commander of the Order of Niger (CON), the third highest National Honours award to any individual.
Some members of the coalition comprises the Independent Nsukka Solidarity Agenda Worldwide, United Nsukka Indigenes for Good Governance, Nsukka Arise for Democratic Change, Nsukka Youths Empowerment Initiative, Greater Nsukka Congress and Alliance for Democratic Governance, among three others.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Chief Willy Ezugwu, the coalition of sociopolitical pressure groups and civil society organisations noted that “it is an honour well deserved.”
According to NDM, “Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (CON) has distinguished himself in many ways respects from the private sector as General Manager of Premier Insurance Brokers Limited Enugu to his life a Philanthropist which he caught early in life having served as the president of the Rotary Club of Emene in Enugu State to his political career as two-term House of Representatives member before being elected governor of Enugu State.
“As a Governor, he has showcased his people-oriented leadership through a departure from the past where his predecessors since 1999 majorly focused on urban development.
“Governor Ugwanyi opted to align with the ordinary citizens by turning his attention to rural development and within his first tenure, he completed the Udenu Ring Road which had been a death trap for most the people of Ezimo and Imilike-Ani, opening up these towns to the outside world.
“Governor Ugwuanyi also dared to venture into capital-intensive and legacy projects like the Nike Lake T-junction Flyover Bridge, construction and renovation of hospitals across the three senatorial district.
Others are the Nike Lake junction – Harmony Estate Road – Amorji Nike – Adoration Pilgrimage Centre, Phase II and III, in Enugu East LGA, which will link Abakpa and Emene and serve as a critical bypass that will decongest traffic gridlock at Abakpa T-junction; the asphalting of a 22.443 km (13.945 mi) inter-community link road – the Neke-Mbu-Ogbodu Aba-ObolloEtiti road – that connects Isi-Uzo and Udenu LGA, under the Rural Access and Mobility Project II (RAMP II); rehabilitation of numerous internal roads in the university town of Nsukka and the flood routing/erosion control works at Achi Street, Independence Layout, Enugu.
“Other notable projects completed include the abandoned 11km Opi-Nsukka dual carriageway, rehabilitation of some failed sections of federal road, the Nsukka Stadium, the massive University Medical and Applied Sciences, Igbo-Eno, the Federal Polytechnic, Ohodo, the Enugu State secretariat Annex at Ede Oballa in Nsukka, to mention a few.
“Therefore, the Central Working Committee, leadership of various affiliate-groups and organizations in Nsukka Democratic Movement, and indeed the ordinary people of Enugu North, who are beneficiaries of the rural projects executed by Governor Ugwuanyi, heartily congratulates the performing governor of Enugu State for the well deserved honour confered on him by President Muhammadu Buhari”, the statement concluded.
