The Executive Chairman of Oru West Local Government Area of Imo State and the Imo State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon Willie T. C. Okoliegwo has appealed to the Federal Government to upscale it’s Flood, Emergency Response and Control mechanism to mitigate the rising flood disaster and huge number of displacements across hundreds of communities in numerous Local Governments in the Country.
Addressing journalists in Owerri last night, at the state Capital, the Imo ALGON Chairman however decried the attitude of rural dwellers whose sense of history regarding flood planes and flooding are limited despite sensitization leading to several violations of flood-prone areas that are mistaken as habitable areas like Oguta, Orashi and it’s environs.
He commended the repatoire of knowledge and intelligent-urban planning as well as proactive arrangements made by His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma the Imo State Governor aimed at addressing frontally, the state’s share in the flood catastrophy.
The Imo ALGON Chairman commended the palliatives delivered and other assistance with sense of urgency to the endangered victims noting that the situation has come with consequences like loss of lives, means of livelihood, indexing diseases, hunger, destruction of Agricultural produce, Houses, Businesses, Pollution of ground water with rotten contamination, dead bodies, influx of reptiles and other sea animals taking refuge in homes; all these collectively affect the economy and so on he said.
He further called for the inclusion of the 27 LGA’s of the State in the emergency financing plan either through international support, ecology funding climate change Adaptation, financing or Emergency management noting that this years flood catastrophy surpassed those of the past including that of the 2012, and has seriously wrecked havoc on both lives and the entire economic chain.
Hon. T. C Okoliegwo concluded by condoling those that have either lost their loved ones or have their properties destroyed, leaving them with the future uncertain.
