Labour Day: Local Government Workers Linchpin To National Growth — ALGON National President HonAlabi
The National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Kolade David Alabi has expressed his profound appreciation to Nigerian workers nationwide with particular mention of those at the Local Governments across the country as they join others world over to celebrate 2023 Labour Day.
A press statement issued by his media office during a week-long official duties in Abuja, read in part “Let me espouse the Nigerian Workers and especially those at various Councils across the Country for their dedication, resilience and hard work in the discharge of their duties, despite the obvious difficulties surrounding them in their workplace as well as the size of pay package in the face of imminent economic difficulties”.
“While today marks this year’s Workers’ Day celebration, let me use the opportunity to thank them for both their visible and invisible sacrifices in the course of embarking on their various assignments even when confronted with workplace hazards.
“World over, May Day is extensively Workers Day which provides the opportunity to celebrate our labourers and encourage them to be aware of their rights, especially at the rural level even where or when most of them are either unskilled, partly educated, skilled, illiterate, or most of them working to support rural growth.”
He noted that while reminiscing our united struggles for grassroots democracy as enunciated by the founding fathers of local governments through the Constitution, the workers represent the linchpin that insulates and catalyze development.
Hon Alabi revealed that while the labour of our hero’s past shall not be in vain, the time to address the concerns of workers is now through enabling legislation, capacity building, incentivized remunerations, health insurance, pension, and general well-being.
He prayed for continued inspiration, God’s wisdom and the common good of workers to inflame and encourage more passion and positive energy aimed at sustaining a virile local government system.
