Protracted Sanctions: African Students Set To Pay Solidarity Visit To Zimbabwe on Monday
The leadership of the All-African Students Union (AASU) has unveiled activities for a planned solidarity visit to Zimbabwe as part of the students’ advocacy for the lifting of sanctions against the country.
AASU President, Osisiogu Osikenyi, disclosed that the students from across Africa will depart for Harare, Zimbabwe on Monday.
While addressing some pertinent issues around the African continent at the AASU headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria, especially as it concerns the students’ passionate advocacy for the lift of sanctions on Zimbabwe after protracted 20 years of international blockade, the AASU President itemised activities of the students ahead of their advocacy visit to the country next week.
Standing on their earlier reasons for the advocacy for the review of the sanctions, especially around the four-key reform pillars put in place by the President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa administration, the students reiterated their call for the lifting of the sanctions to enable Zimbabwe to progress at the same pace with other African countries.
Insisting that Zimbabwe may be able to procure arms to protect her territorial integrity as a result of the lingering decades of sanctions, AASU called all youth leaders in the country to join their planned rally in Harare.
The students disclosed that about 50 students and youth leaders from across Africa will be part of the trip ahead of their rally, vigil, and a world press conference, inviting the media and other stakeholders, students and youth leaders in the country, to be part of their planned activities to press for the immediate lifting of the sanctions from October 24 to 26 in Harare.
