Explosion Rocks Rivers Assembly Over Impeachment Threat Against House Leader, Gov. Fubara
Rivers State House of Assembly has been set ablaze by suspected political thugs in the state after it was reportedly hit by explosion on Sunday night.
Several media sources report that some suspected arsonists threw an explosive into the complex around 9:25 pm.
The action followed perceived move by the House to commence an impeachment process on the Leader of the House, Hon. Edison Ehie, and the State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara on today, Monday.
The late night incident was said to have caused uneasy calm around the assembly complex, leading to immediate deployment of over 17 security trucks and four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), which have been stationed at the facility with over 50 Federal Security personnel mobilised to the complex.
A source told newsmen that the legislature has concluded plans to impeach Hon. Ehie, and Governor Fubara at its resumed sitting over some undisclosed reasons.
A senior police officer in the state, who did not want to be mentioned confirmed the development in media reports, adding that it took efforts of police and the state Fire Service teams to put out the fire.
Vanguard quoted a source as saying: “Yes, the Rivers State House of Assembly main chamber was under attack and set on fire. It was policemen and the fire service team that helped to put out the fire.”
