African Traditional Council, Adeleke, Sultan, Ooni, CSOs, Pay Final Respect to Iconic Legal Luminary and Yoruba Culture Advocate
In a historic gathering that transcended borders, dignitaries from around the world converged at the “De Distinguished Multi Purpose Hall” on Osogbo-Iwo Road in Ido Osun, Osun State. Their purpose was to pay their final respects to His Royal Majesty, Kabiyesi Alayemore, Architect (Dr) Barrister Aderemi Adeen Adedapo (Saporoyo I), the revered Olojudo Alayemore of Ido Osun.
The late monarch, a champion of Yoruba language, culture, and tradition, passed away at the age of 72 on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
Kabiyesi Alayemore’s legacy extended beyond Nigeria’s borders. As an engineer within the Traditional Council, he tirelessly promoted African heritage and language, leaving an indelible mark not only in Yorubaland but across the entire African continent. His mentorship spanned decades, shaping the next generation of leaders.
Remarkably, Kabiyesi held the distinction of being the sole Nigerian royal with full continental rank within Africa. His roles included Secretary of the Yoruba Traditional Council, Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the National Traditional Council of Nigeria, and Convener of the Traditional Council of Africa.
During a poignant moment, Kabiyesi playfully contributed ₦10,000 to boost ongoing public donations for the Civil Societies’ Burial Programme in honor of Late Afenifere Spokesperson, Comrade Yinka Odumakin. This gesture raised the total to ₦10 million in 2021. Additionally, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Enitan Ojaja II, generously donated the Ojaja Arena Hall and Guest House in Ile-Ife for the same noble cause.
Notable political figures rallied behind the commemoration. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State contributed ₦5 million, Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State gave ₦2.5 million, and Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State donated ₦1 million. Their individual contributions supplemented the Central Burial Committee’s efforts through the Southwest Governors’ Forum.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by Deputy Prince Kola Adewusi, praised Kabiyesi’s virtues and called for a peaceful succession process. Alawo of Awo spoke on behalf of Ooni of Ife and the Southwest Traditional Council. The gathering also included dignitaries such as Orangun of Oke Ila, Oba (Dr) Adedokun Abolarin, and representatives from Saki, Oke-Ogun, Oyo State.
Foremost June 12 Activist, Comrade Awa Bamiji, led a delegation of civil society leaders and seasoned journalists from Impact Business Radio (IBR) and Independent African Television (IATV). Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion.
Musical tributes echoed throughout the venue, with Alhaji Sefiu Alao captivating guests inside the Reception Hall. Fidau Prayers, overseen by Islamic clerics, were broadcast live on Rave FM and Unique FM in Osun State. Abundant food, drinks, and heightened security ensured a fitting tribute to Kabiyesi’s life and legacy.
As the sun set on this momentous day, attendees bore witness to a celebration befitting a true luminary—one whose impact will resonate for generations. May Kabiyesi Alayemore’s soul continue to rest in eternal peace.
