In a move aimed at reducing the cost of governance and promoting prudent management of resources, President Bola Tinubu has directed that only authorized officials with business at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) should attend the forthcoming meetings in New York, United States.

The directive, disclosed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, during a one-day retreat organized by the State House management, is part of the administration’s commitment to ensuring efficient service delivery and addressing the concerns of Nigerians.

Gbajabiamila emphasized that the President is determined to avoid the past practice of sending large delegations to international meetings, where some individuals use the opportunity for personal business.

He stressed that only those with official business at UNGA should attend, and that the President is committed to reducing the cost of governance.

The retreat, themed “Strengthening Institutional Mechanism for Effective Delivery,” aimed to facilitate collaboration and coordination among government agencies under the direct supervision of the State House.

Gbajabiamila urged heads of agencies to comply strictly with the directive and lead by example in ensuring compliance with statutes, laws, regulations, and policies designed to enhance governance.

The Chief of Staff also hinted at upcoming policy announcements aimed at ensuring efficient service delivery in government operations.

He emphasized the need for the State House and agencies under its supervision to ensure that their functions are guided by statutes, regulations, policy decisions, and presidential directives.

The President’s directive is seen as a positive step towards promoting accountability and reducing the financial burden of governance on the country.

The 79th session of UNGA is scheduled to hold in September, and it remains to be seen how the new directive will be implemented.
