A Magistrate Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has sentenced 40 residents to three months imprisonment each for violating the state’s Environmental Law.
The defendants, who pleaded guilty to charges ranging from indiscriminate disposal of refuse to illegal scavenging, were given an option of a N50,000 fine.
The court’s decision comes as part of the state government’s efforts to curb environmental offenses and promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
According to the State Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Hon Nafisat Buge, the motive behind the enforcement is to prevent the outbreak of diseases, flood disasters, and other dangers associated with improper refuse disposal.
The defendants were arrested by a task force inaugurated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to enforce environmental standards. The task force has been conducting raids and arrests since Tuesday, with the Mobile Court prosecuting offenders.
Commissioner Buge emphasized that the ministry has been sensitizing the public against environmental offenses through physical engagement, media advocacy, and public awareness campaigns. She urged residents to use designated waste management facilities or seek the services of commercial waste collectors.
The state government has also assessed and is currently desilting blocked drainages caused by improper refuse disposal. The exercise will continue until residents comply with environmental regulations.
This development marks a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability and public health in Kwara State.
