Nigeria Celebrates 64 Years of Independence: NGIJ Urges Government to Prioritize Good Governance
The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to intensify efforts towards delivering campaign promises on good governance, economic recovery, and national unity.
According to NGIJ President, Malam Abdulrahman Aliagan, Nigeria stands at a critical juncture, facing numerous challenges that have tested its people’s resilience. Despite lingering economic hardship, terrorism, kidnapping, and social vices, Nigerians remain determined to propel the country towards a brighter future.
The Guild emphasized the need for prioritizing freedom of the press, citing harassment and intimidation of journalists that stifles their ability to report truthfully. “We demand an end to these unnecessary attacks and call for protection of press freedom in Nigeria,” Aliagan stated.
The NGIJ is committed to deepening democracy, transparency, and accountability and is ready to collaborate with the government to rid the nation of corruption. President Tinubu’s administration must address the root causes of economic woes and intensify efforts against terrorism, kidnapping, and social ills.
Aliagan also urged key stakeholders in the oil sector to play a pivotal role in revitalizing the industry, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits among Nigerians. He called for comprehensive reforms to address the sector’s challenges.
As Nigeria celebrates its independence, citizens are urged to join hands with the government to overcome obstacles and secure a brighter future. The Guild prayed for leaders to have wisdom and fortitude to navigate the path ahead.
The 64th Independence anniversary serves as a reminder to renew commitment to democracy, social justice, and national unity. By fostering unity, cooperation, and civic engagement, Nigerians can overcome challenges and build a prosperous future.
