Federal Government Intervenes in Osun State, Segilola Gold Mine Dispute
The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has established a fact-finding team to investigate the disputes between Osun State Government and Thor Explorations Limited, owners of the Segilola Resources Operating Limited. The controversy surrounds taxation and operational matters.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, announced the probe, emphasizing the need for resolution to prevent harm to the economy. “Indiscriminate closures of mining operations by subnationals raises the risk of discouraging foreign direct investments and even worse, possible divestment by existing companies,” Dr. Alake warned.
Dr. Alake stressed that mining is on the exclusive legislative list, adding, “The Ministry of Solid Minerals should be consulted before such disruptive actions are taken.”
The fact-finding team, led by Dr. Mary Ogbe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, will engage both parties to resolve the dispute and restore industrial harmony.
Dr. Alake reiterated the Federal Government’s interest in boosting economic growth, employment, and community development through productive activities nationwide. He cautioned that cessation of industrial production would undermine economic prosperity, deny workers income opportunities, and exacerbate adversity.
“I hereby call on His Excellency, the Governor of Osun State, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, and the management of Thor Exploration Limited to sue for peace and industrial harmony in the interest of the workers and their dependents who may be adversely affected by closure of operations at the factory,” Dr. Alake appealed.
The Minister urged both parties to cooperate with the fact-finding team and allow production to continue while the issues are resolved, ensuring the continued operation of the Segilola Gold Project.
