The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the release of 22 EndSARS movement protesters arrested during the commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protest at Lekki Toll Gate earlier on Sunday.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command’s spokesperson, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olanrewaju Ishola, personally oversaw the release process.
Background of the #EndSARS Movement
The #EndSARS movement began in October 2020 as a call to end police brutality and disband the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The movement gained momentum after a video surfaced online showing SARS officers allegedly shooting a young man in Delta State.
Release of Arrested Protesters
Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, also confirmed the release of the 22 arrested activists, stating that all seized items were returned to them. Effiong shared that he had a discussion with the Commissioner of Police regarding the matter.
The #EndSARS movement has been pushing for accountability and justice for victims of police brutality. Despite the disbandment of SARS, many judicial panel recommendations remain unimplemented, leaving protest leaders feeling frustrated and betrayed.
The release of the arrested protesters is a positive development, but the struggle for justice and accountability continues.
The #EndSARS movement remains a powerful symbol of resistance against oppression and a beacon of hope for a better future in Nigeria.
