Lekki Toll Gate #EndSARS Anniversary: Nigerians Commemorate 4th Year Amidst Police Brutality, 22 Arrested (Full List)

Today, Nigerians mark the fourth anniversary of the historic #EndSARS protest, which began as a call to end police brutality and disband the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The movement has become a symbol of resistance against oppression.

Nigerians took to social media to share tributes and prayers, remembering those who lost their lives during the protests. The Lekki Toll Gate incident, where soldiers allegedly opened fire on peaceful demonstrators, remains a painful reminder of the sacrifices made.

In Lagos, protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate, demanding full implementation of judicial panel reports. However, the police fired teargas to disperse the crowd, leading to chaotic scenes and arrest of no fewer than 22 people.

“They have started firing teargas at us. I fell into the gutter; I was hit on the head,” said Excel, one of the protesters.

Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, justified the police action, stating that they had to disperse the protesters to prevent traffic disruption. “They were told to disperse, but they were adamant; we had to use minimal force.”

Despite the passage of four years, many judicial panel recommendations remain unimplemented, leaving protest leaders feeling frustrated and betrayed. The #EndSARS movement’s legacy continues to inspire calls for justice and accountability.

The anniversary serves as a poignant reminder of the power of collective action and the importance of protecting human rights. Nigerians continue to demand justice and reform, seeking an end to police brutality and a more equitable society.

The protests, which began in October 2020, drew national attention and led to the disbandment of SARS. However, the Nigerian government’s failure to fully implement the judicial panels’ recommendations has sparked renewed calls for action.
