President Bola Tinubu has called on leaders in West Africa to draw inspiration from Ghana’s recent peaceful elections, citing it as a model of democratic maturity and commitment to national unity.
Speaking at the 66th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS in Abuja, President Tinubu praised President Nana Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana for the success of their presidential and parliamentary elections.
“I urge all of us in the region to learn from this good democratic practice and prioritise our country’s national unity to ensure political stability of the region,” President Tinubu stated. He also commended the peaceful transfer of power in Ghana, noting that it demonstrates political maturity and respect for the will of the people.
In his address, President Tinubu highlighted the achievements of ECOWAS under his leadership, including strides in regional integration, economic growth, conflict resolution, and counterterrorism efforts. He emphasized the importance of protecting citizens and creating an enabling environment for them to prosper.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, commended Nigeria for paying its community levy in full, reflecting the country’s leadership and commitment under President Tinubu. The payment of N85 billion and $54 million represents 100% of the 2023 levy and the 2024 levy up to July 2024.
President Tinubu’s call to action comes as the region prepares to celebrate ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary in 2025. As the regional community looks to the future, President Tinubu urged member states to recommit to the bloc’s founding ideals of economic integration, peace, and prosperity.
