A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore a N10 million bail in the alleged cybercrime charges instituted against him by the Inspector General of Police.
The convener of #Revolutionnow Movement is also to produce a surety that must be a responsible individual with landed property valued in like sum.
The bail was granted by Justice Musa Liman on Thursday, with conditions that include the requirement to deposit his international passport with the court.
The surety is expected to deposit the original documents of landed property and a passport photograph to the registrar of the court.
While ruling on the bail application, the trial judge, Justice Musa Liman, ordered Sowore to deposit his international passport with the registrar of the court.
The judge, however, gave him 24 hours to perfect the bail conditions or be remanded by the police until the bail is perfected.
Sowore had honoured the invitation of the police on Monday, January 27, 2025, when he was questioned at the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
He was subsequently granted administrative bail but he rejected the conditions of bail and remained in custody.
The police later filed a 16-count charge of cybercrime against him.
Reacting to the bail bond, Sowore stated that the Nigerian State’s unjust charges aim to obtain prison sentences for activists.
The case highlights the ongoing tensions between the government and activists advocating for change in Nigeria.
The bail grant is a significant development in Sowore’s case, which has drawn attention to the challenges faced by activists and protesters in the West African country.
