In a dramatic turn of events, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, made a bold return to the Assembly Complex on Thursday, accompanied by a heavy security detail. This move comes amidst reports of the withdrawal of security operatives assigned to the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.
Obasa, who has been embroiled in controversy, arrived at the complex with a contingent of security personnel and headed straight to the Speaker’s Office. In an interview with newsmen, he firmly stated, “I was never removed, there’s nothing like impeachment.”
The situation took a more alarming turn with a statement from Victor Ganzallo, the Special Adviser on Information to the Speaker.
Ganzallo raised concerns over what he described as a hostile takeover by Obasa, following the unexplained withdrawal of police escorts and security personnel from the Assembly Complex. This sudden action has left Speaker Meranda and the entire legislative house dangerously exposed, he said.
“It is important to stress that Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda was duly elected by her colleagues, and her leadership was reinforced with a strong vote of thanks,” Ganzallo stated. “The timing of the withdrawal of security, combined with the hostile actions of the former Speaker and his associates, raises the question: Is this politically motivated, or is this part of a larger strategy to destabilize the current administration?”
Ganzallo also highlighted the potential gender dynamics at play, questioning whether the aggressive actions against Speaker Meranda were a reflection of deep-seated biases against female leadership in the political arena. “Is Rt. Hon. Meranda’s role as a woman Speaker being used as a justification for such brazen intimidation and disruption?” he asked.
The statement further suggested that these actions are tied to the ongoing internal power struggle regarding the removal of the former Speaker. Speculation is rife that this latest move aims to weaken the current leadership and create instability within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
“We demand an immediate clarification from both the police and the state government on their roles in these actions,” Ganzallo continued. “The absence of security for those in leadership positions raises serious questions about the safety and protection of public officials in Lagos. If such intimidation can occur at the highest levels, what protection is there for the ordinary citizens of Lagos?”
Ganzallo concluded by calling for a full investigation into these actions and demanding accountability from all involved parties. “This situation must not be allowed to stand unchallenged,” he asserted.
As the situation unfolds, the Lagos State House of Assembly remains on edge, with the political landscape becoming increasingly volatile. The public awaits further developments and clarifications from the authorities.
