The opposition group, the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has called for the immediate removal of the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, over allegations linking him to an alleged corruption scandal involving a purported government agency and the sale of public appointments.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC expressed concern over allegations made by Prince Mathew Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claims to be the Director-General of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), an agency that the Presidency has since disowned.
The group alleged that the non-existent agency was used as a vehicle to siphon public funds and accused the Chief of Staff of facilitating its operations, describing the development as a major test of transparency and accountability for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the statement, claims by Adeyemi that the PFIPC received allocations in the 2026 federal budget and successfully opened a domiciliary account, a pounds sterling account and a Treasury Single Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria have raised serious questions about how a body allegedly unknown to the Presidency could access such high-level financial privileges.
The NDC queried whether officials of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation knowingly processed forged documents to facilitate the opening of the accounts and called on the Presidency to provide immediate explanations to Nigerians.
The opposition group also questioned claims that the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation approved 314 staff positions for the agency, wondering how such an extensive administrative action could have occurred without the knowledge of the Presidency or the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
More significantly, the party pointed to allegations that the Chief of Staff demanded 48 per cent of the agency’s take-off grant, estimated at over N27.3 billion, a request which Adeyemi reportedly rejected. It further referenced claims that Adeyemi secured his appointment through the payment of N600 million, with N400 million allegedly paid through intermediaries and a balance of N200 million outstanding.
Describing the allegations as evidence of “institutionalised corruption”, the NDC said the scandal reinforced concerns that corruption had become entrenched in governance under the current administration.
The party also drew attention to the death of Mr. Babatunde Tanimola, described as an intermediary between Adeyemi and the Chief of Staff, who reportedly died in a hotel fire incident in Abuja in October 2025. It further cited claims by Adeyemi that he had survived multiple assassination attempts, including an alleged attack along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in September last year.
Consequently, the NDC demanded the immediate removal of Gbajabiamila from office to enable what it described as a free and impartial investigation into the matter.
The group also called on President Tinubu to establish an independent investigative panel to examine all aspects of the controversy, including the alleged operations of the PFIPC, its budgetary allocations, financial accounts, staff approvals and related transactions.
Additionally, the party urged anti-graft agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Nigeria Police Force, to launch comprehensive investigations into the allegations.
“The culture of impunity and the brazen sale of public appointments must end,” the statement said, insisting that anyone found culpable, regardless of status or position, should face prosecution in accordance with the law.
The Presidency and the Chief of Staff had not issued any fresh response to the latest demands by the NDC as of the time of filing this report.
