In a call to action that underlines the growing importance of women’s economic inclusion, the Federal Government has urged Nigerian women to seize investment opportunities in the capital market as a strategic avenue for wealth creation. This announcement coincides with International Women’s Day celebrations, bringing focus to women’s roles in fostering economic growth and financial stability.
The Nigeria’s Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, made this appeal at the official launch of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Podcast in Abuja. The podcast, designed to educate and inform the public about the capital market, marks a significant step toward broadening access to financial literacy across the nation.
Addressing the audience, Dr. Uzoka-Anite emphasized the transformative potential of the capital market for Nigerian women, highlighting the need for policy reforms and frameworks that promote gender inclusion within the financial sector. “Opening opportunities for women in the capital market creates a pathway to wealth creation,” she stated. She also underscored the unique challenges women face, particularly the dual demands of professional and familial responsibilities, and praised women’s inherent aptitude for financial management. “Women are very good with investing; we know how to manage money in a way that benefits the whole family,” the Minister remarked.
The Minister advocated for a comprehensive approach to empower women in the capital market. This includes both individual efforts to enhance financial literacy and institutional measures that ensure women are judged on their competencies and capacities. “We must encourage institutions to treat women fairly and support their active participation,” she added.
Dr. Uzoka-Anite commended the SEC for its innovative initiative, describing the podcast as “highly needed at this time.” She expressed optimism that it would achieve its objectives, particularly in fostering greater awareness among women about the capital market’s opportunities.
In his remarks, the Director-General of the SEC, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, explained the broader purpose of the podcast. “Our goal is to disseminate information across Nigeria, reaching even the most remote areas, so that people understand the capital market and how they can leverage it to create wealth,” he said.
The Federal Government’s emphasis on women’s participation in the capital market aligns with Nigeria’s broader ambition of achieving a $1 trillion economy. By encouraging women to harness the potential of financial investments, this initiative seeks to drive sustainable development, economic growth, and national prosperity.
